"Obama is something of a fluke. McCain was a terrible candidate. The (R)'s probably felt that after Bush, they weren't going to win anyway and McCain had never really gotten his turn."

I always thought McCain was a throw away candidate. They just let him have his fifteen minutes of fame as a reward for being a faithful party member. No Republican stood a chance in that election and they knew it. No point in wasting a viable candidate.
