The Overton Window no doubt operated in Truman's case as well. The point of Beck's book is that the Overton Window can be manipulated, moved as it were, in order to achieve one's objective. People will accept or reject a given set of conditions depending on the position of the Overton Window. Someone who knows how to manipulate public opinion can move that position so that people will accept what they formerly rejected or reject what they formerly accepted. Here are a few more examples: -pant suits for women -tattoos for both men and women -hate speech -politically correct speech -patriotism -respect for the military (See how even the most rabid lefties now pretend to support our troops? They saw that spitting on troops returning from Vietnam was working against them--moving the Overton Window of public opinion to advance their agenda.)
