>>How could Gates be happy about lending credibility to a platform that will enable untold millions to hop on the inter/intranet and do significant computing tasks without windows?

The movement to NC and compact non-windows WILL happen with or without Gates. That's a given. Now faced with this reality, what's the best startegy for Gates? "Sit and watch" ain't it. I believe he has decided to ride along with it by making sure his browser is a part of it. He gains a lot with this foot in the door -- he can then sell a lot of his new toys as "plug-ins" to Explorer.

Look at Windows 98 direction. The OS is being de-emphasized and the browser is being pushed as THE desk top. Let's face it the average buyer out there doesn't form a "relationship" with their OS but their user interface. They're not going to care which OS is running under Explorer they'll buy based on price (and maybe performance).

Yes, Gates will oppose the NC wave as much as he can, BUT if he can't stop it, he has well positioned himself to ride it without loosing face.
