The problem with electricity, is that it is basically electromagnetic waves like the rays from the sun, and you cannot keep sun rays in a box, either, they need movement in order to exist. There was once a plan to store electricity in superconductors, but it seems that they hit a limit on that. So, for any near future, electricity is basically transport of energy, just like a drive shaft or a laser beam. And that is also why electric cars are mainly about batteries and low friction.

I believe that most western countries will adopt a multitude of different energy sources and storage mechanisms, but for every windmill we put up, oil is redirected towards others. As long as the world's population grows, and food production depends on energy supplies, there will be demand for oil. However, the world's population will stop to grow one day, and I the cause will probably not be family planning or reduced fertility, but lack of food or illnesses. The price of oil maybe be part of the timing, unless we make huge improvements in nuclear fusion or something else.
