deng xiaoping initiated market reforms by urging decentralization, i believe in the late 70s. that was the beginning of the slow and steady move to a free market in china. i don't know how far they have come. many say their economy is now more free market than ours is. i think that might be true. of course politically, they are still communist. but that may change too as they embrace the free market more and more. china was a weak nation given her large land mass and huge population. she didn't begin to get strong until her economy improved under the market reform that deng started. she did have a big army but it was technologically vastly inferior to the united states back then. and the technology she did have was mostly stolen from the west. the united states has been slowly regressing under the weight of socialist polices for nearly a hundred years. it looks like the entire flock of chickens are coming home to roost now. we are becoming socialists. we have been doing so for a long time. obama is just trying to complete the process. so the USA is 'dead in the water' as you put it because we have been embracing socialism. it isn't smart to embrace socialism. but unfortunately a lot of smart people do. they wouldn't though, if they understood the first thing about real world economics. most people want and believe in the something for nothing socialist model that will end up destroying themselves along with everyone else. and here we are..
