Austin was the only place it could happen in Texas. It flew under the radar nationally, but it was really almost contemporaneous with the scene in the Haight in San Francisco, but much smaller. Some of the Vulcan guys were good friends with Owsley and brought a lot of great acid to Austin. They'd take weed smuggled from Mexico, peyote and mescaline back to San Francisco. en.wikipedia.org In those days, you just put the weed in the spare tire space and got waved on through!
