Actually, I had a black bear stand up right in front of me.

I was out walking around my ranch early one summer morning last year. I was kind of day dreaming as I walked along when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. Looking closer I saw it was two cubs scampering up a tree.

My first thought was "Uh, oh, where's mama?" At that very moment who rises up out of the tall grass about thirty feet in front of me....mama. I'm a big fan of talking to the animals so I just said, in a calm voice, "Pardon me mama." and slowly backed away. She just stood there and watched. She meant me no harm. Like any mother, she just wanted to make certain their was no threat to her babies.

I must say it was a thrilling moment. :)

BTW, what was the name of that weed again? I'd like to look it up.
