My dad wanted to be a pilot, but his math skills were to good, and they made him a navigator. He was on C-47's, carried cargo, dropped paratroopers in N. Africa, Sicily and Italy. He flew Patton a couple of times.

He also got lost a couple of times. He depended on shooting the stars to know where he was, and sometimes you couldn't SEE any stars. Then, you did what was known as "dead reckoning", basically, guessing where you were based on what you did know, compass and airspeed. You could be way off if there was a good wind.

I have an uncle that flew P-51's and another that was a tank commander.
