But, that isn't a stimulus, at least according to Republicans

Perpetual motion economic theory - good one - another nobel prize!

It's akin to an engine choke - it may help to get things started but it doesn't keep it running. Worse - most studies are proving the stimulus didn't even get things started and may have made things worse or only slowed the decline.

Well, let's see. They get checks, then spend those checks.

That money doesn't come out of thin air. It has to come from somewhere. The taxpayers. So while the unemployed spend the money that was taken from working Americans, those working Americans have less money to spend themselves. The net gain is zero. No stimulative effect.

A tax decrease would have a more efficient stimulus effect by allowing those who earn the money to spend the money.

CJ, > Now, according to those paragons of economics brilliance, what would be a stimulus is a tax cut.

That won't work, either, and partially for the reasons you give.

Most people are approaching the problem the wrong way. "What can government do to turn back the tide?" Not much except help everyone brace for impact.

The government giving free money to the unemployed is not stimulus. It is welfare.
