Cesar Chavez on illegal immigration (from Wikipedia):

en.wikipedia.org

The UFW during Chávez's tenure was committed to restricting immigration. César Chávez and Dolores Huerta fought the Bracero Program that existed from 1942 to 1964. Their opposition stemmed from their belief that the program undermined US workers and exploited the migrant workers. Since the Bracero program ensured a constant supply of cheap immigrant labor for growers, immigrants could not protest any infringement of their rights, lest they be fired and replaced. Their efforts contributed to Congress ending the Bracero Program in 1964. In 1973, the UFW was one of the first labor unions to oppose proposed employer sanctions that would have prohibited hiring undocumented immigrants. Later during the 1980s, while Chávez was still working alongside UFW president, Dolores Huerta, the cofounder of the UFW, was key in getting the amnesty provisions into the 1986 federal immigration act.[5]

Make it a condition to receive unemployment and there will be lots of takers. Better yet, end unemployment altogether.

I thought the 99-week benefits was one of the more stupid approaches to "stimulus". The results seem pretty predictable.

Those slots will fill and the salary money will stay in the US instead of getting sent back to Mexico.

Not likely. Most Americans would revolt before becoming farm workers. AFAIK its now become a racial thing. Mexicans are farm workers, whites are not. Oddly, the flow of funds to Mexico is down significantly all ready, because most farm workers are no longer actually migrant, they instead have settled down in one area, rent or buy housing, buy cars, etc. At least in the area I'm in. Thats a very noticeable change of the last 15 years. Consequently their money goes to their lifestyle here, not back to Mexico.

Cesar Chavez was adamantly opposed to illegal immigration, BTW. How little respect the UFW leadership has for their founding father......

I suspect many (most) legal Mexican workers in the USA at some level would oppose illegals, since they ARE competition for work (unlike Americans, who are not competition for farm jobs), but I also suspect many (most) would want exceptions for their own relatives. Pretty typical human behavior...
