Cable and xDSL will happen together, with threats from each pressuring the other. xDSL requires telco involvement, since you need equipment at the first telco switch upstream from homes/whatever for it to work.

Pairgain looks promising, I've been making a pretty penny with them lately.

Actually Doug, you are wrong on the 56K modem not being able to connect at greater than 33K. I regularly connect from my home to AOL at speeds of 46K to 50K. I know many others do too. Not sure where you get your information. I really enjoy using my x2.
