Teens found dead in Haryana, honour killing suspected

Kill the ‘Honour-Killing’Refugees in their own land India or BCCISearching Fernandes In another suspected case of honour killing that surfaced on Sunday, two teenaged lovers were found dead and their bodies were recovered from the playground of a school in Somain village, around 70 km from Haryana’s Fatehabad district.

The dead bodies have been identified as Reena (16) and Sham Mohammad (19) and were recovered from the playground of Government Senior Secondary School. The villagers spotted the bodies when they were on their way to graze animals and informed the village sarpanch who later informed the police.

Earlier in the morning, police were working on a suicide theory after they found poisonous tablets near the victims. Later, police registered a case of murder on the boy’s father Prem Khan’s complaint, against Reena’s maternal uncles — Ram Mehar, Vijender and other unknown person.

The victims had run away last year from their homes but were caught by the police, at Laloda railway station in the district later. Police sources said that the village panchayat was against their relationship as Reena was Jat and Sham a Muslim.

Following the panchayat’s decision, Sham Mohammad was sent to Punjab to continue his studies in a madarsa and the girl was allowed to stay with her uncle at the village. Sham had recently returned during his vacation, said police sources.

Prem Khan alleged that Sham had been called on by the girl’s uncles after they contacted him on his mobile phone on Saturday night. He said that Sham Mohammad’s eyes were missing and his hand was broken. He further said that there were injury marks on the heads of both victims indicating murder. He said that the two used to study in the same school two years ago.

Police officials said that the dead bodies have been sent to Rohtak for postmortem and the report is expected on Monday.

This is the second suspected honour killing in a fortnight. Earlier, highly decomposed bodies of a teenaged girl and boy were found hanging in an abandoned house, also in Tohana township.
