Actually the Zero was not better. The P-40 could outdo them from the getgo. They were not as nimble than the P-40, but much faster in a dive. Just as the Germans abandoned the triplane because the enemy found out that faster planes could out do them with the right tactic, the Japenese found that faster but less nimble American planes could easily outdo a Zero. They just had to use different tactics.
