Thanks for pointing that out because that's true. The numbers of self-employed and/or contract labor has grown disproportionately in the last 25 years, and they do fall through the cracks as far as having a safety net goes.

To get unemployment compensation, the employer that laid you off has to pay unemployment insurance.

There probably should be an equivalent system for the self-employed.
