"But the AZ law says clearly they only ask status if the person is detained for some other crime first." I've got no problem with that LITERALLY. But, we all know some cops abuse their power, and a cop can detain you for any reason he cares to, and cops can and do lie, all the time, even under oath. The problem is the potential abuse it enables. Many cops will turn it into a new profit center, detaining illegals, extorting money, drugs, sex, under the threat of deportation. It's a bad law.
