The masters are better at disguising slavery today in the form of "freedom and liberty". Under the illusion of freedom and liberty, the slaves are more productive and generally do not threaten rebellion. Think of slavery this way: Slavery 1.0 - Whips, chains, and torture widely used. Not very efficient and ultimately counterproductive. Many slaves died or were very sickly and weak. Slavery 2.0 - Whips, chains, and torture threatened, but infrequently used. Neither very efficient nor productive. Many slaves deeply resented their enslavement and rebelled or did not put forth much effort for their masters. Slavery 3.0 - Indentured servitude. Generally inefficient over time. The slaves ultimately resented being perpetually in debt and ultimately rebelled or did not put forth much effort for their bosses/masters. Slavery 4.0 - Illusion of freedom and liberty. Efficient form of slavery, but the illusion is becoming more transparent. Taxes are forcibly collected at gunpoint, but that is infrequently required because the slaves are more docile and obedient than in the past. Relatively few slaves question the authority over them as their most basic human needs are generally met. The slaves' lives are dominated by working 50 to 80 hours a week with little time for recreation. There is just enough freedom to compel the slaves to remain obedient and productive as they pursue the "dangling carrot on the stick". Wealthier slaves are taxed even more than destitute slaves. Today, the United States uses Slavery 4.0, which has a very wide net of tax revenue and generates considerable commerce. This is a fairly efficient form of slavery as it preys on the basic human qualities of natural greed and fear. Minimal force is required.
