when his salary depends on his not understanding it."

Peak oil wouldn't hurt my salary at all.

The idea that oil use supports terrorism is silly. Yes, most terrorism is Islamist and some Islamic nations are oil exporters. But so what? Terrorists who have attacked US targets in the last couple decades have been Egyptian, Saudi, Pakistani, and Somali. Of those countries, one produces oil and the others don't.

Terrorists aren't needing big oil bucks to mount their attacks .... its not like they're thinking, ooh, oil prices are up, now we can afford another attack or something.

As for "denying the effect of our oil inefficiency", how about that nickel use? Does it matter to the balance of trade if we import nickel or oil?
