Prior to October 1941, Russia paid America full retail price in gold bullion for all supplies and war material FDR and Congress authorized for them.

At the time of Pearl Harbor, the Nazis had made major advances in Russia. Nazi troops had taken Kiev, Odessa, Karkov, Sevastopol. Both Leningrad and Moscow were under siege by Nazi troops.

Only at this point did FDR and Congress begin supplying the Soviet Union with large amounts of war material without payment, "lend-lease", finally totalling $11 billion in retail price which was never repaid. We had hired mercenaries.

American aid to Russia changed the fortunes of the Nazi command within weeks and they abandoned their attack on Moscow on December 5, 1941.

If America had not provided free war material to Russia after October 1941 Britain and the U.S. would have faced a Nazi empire armed with the full resources of Russia and the Crimea.

Towards the end of the war, we were unsuccessfully attempting to bribe Stalin into attacking Japan. The fact that use of nuclear bombs in Japan could both solve this problem and also limit any expansion by Stalin in Asia weighed heavily in deciding to close the war with nuclear weapons.
