Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders says he is launching international anti-Islam group

Published July 15, 2010 Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Maverick Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders says he is launching an international "freedom alliance" to spread his anti-Islam message across the West.

He told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday he will launch the international movement late this year, initially in five countries: the United States, Canada, Britain, France and Germany.

Wilders, who calls Islam a "fascist" religion and wants an end to immigration from Muslim nations to the West, has seen his support in the Netherlands soar in recent years.

His Freedom Party won the biggest gains in a national election last month, coming third with 24 seats, up from the nine his party held in the last parliament.

Wilders is due to stand trial in October on hate speech charges.

Calgary woman who strangled daughter with scarf spared jail time

July 15, 2010 12:38 PM

Aset Magomadova, charged with the killing of her 14-year-old daughter, Aminat, whom she strangled with a scarf, will not go to jail for the crime. She was sentenced to three years probation.

CALGARY — A Calgary woman will not go to jail for strangling her teenage daughter with a scarf more than three years ago, a judge ruled Thursday.

Court of Queen's Bench Justice Sal LoVecchio gave Aset Magomadova a suspended sentence with three years of probation for killing her 14-year-old daughter, Aminat.

Magomadova testified during her trial that her daughter came at her with a knife during an argument on Feb. 26, 2007.

She said she wrapped the scarf around the girl's neck to get her to put the knife down.

Magomadova was convicted of manslaughter.

The Crown had been seeking a 12-year sentence.
