Peckerwood: We used that term in the woods without any racial reference at all. As I recall a peckerwood was a stupid person (so as to bang his head against wood all day) or a dickhead. Of course, I led a sheltered life. I didn't know that "coon's age" and "queer" were pejoratives with the connotations that they actually have until after I'd already used them, innocently, for years.
