Obama Takes Credit For BP Well Cap July 16, 2010 - 12:28 pm Christopher Helman Bio \| Email Christopher Helman is an Associate Editor at Forbes, based in Houston My colleague Brian Wingfield over at Forbes' Business in the Beltway blog has a nice post today on President Obama's comments this morning about the temporary capping of BP's blowout. Wingfield has posted the entirety of Obama's comments on the spill and highlighted the good bits, such as: "Either we will be able to stop the flow, or we will be able to use it to capture almost all of the oil until the relief well is done." It's nice to see the most powerful man in the world so intimately involved in sticking a cork in this well. But there's no doubt that if fate turned against this seeming fix that the dozens of presidential "we's" would turn into "BPs." Which raises the question: if the president and the federal government are in control of this well now, when things are looking up, what happens if the feds make a bad decision against BP's advice that ends up causing a catastrophic escalation of oil spilling into the gulf (say letting pressure build up too long, causing a new uncontrollable blowout in the sea floor)? If that happened, would the blame and additional liability lay with BP or with the feds?

Obama loves to quote Lincoln (when it is seems to serve his purposes. Why doesn't Obama quote this passage from Lincoln? "You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves." Answer: Because these ideas contradict Obama's governing prejudices.
