401ks are now a crappy idea. They worked in the 80s and 90s mainly because boomers, who were in their most productive years, were constantly funneling money into the equity indexes.

Now, 401ks are toxic. That same demographic group will withdraw more than they put in for decades to come, with a corresponding effect on the stock market.

401ks have outlived their usefulness. Buying and holding indexes is freaking dead as a strategy, but the vast majority of 401k owners, probably more than 99%, don't know how to do anything else. 401ks have created a slow motion negative feedback loop that will gradually gain in speed.
