What is the orbital altitude of GPS satellites?

Regular GPS satellites orbit at an altitude of 10,988 nautical miles (12,645 statute miles).

Underwater GPS

GPS does not work underwater-the radio signals on which it depends cannot pass through water. So submariners have yet to benefit from the revolution in navigation that it allows.

I read a technical description of how it's done, don't recall where. It's fairly sophisticated having to do with identifying the electrical field (?) in the original well. I believe the bit has to be removed for the sensing instruments to be deployed or work, and then drilling resumes with whatever adjustments. It's not GPS.
