but I don't know one darned thing about my maternal ggrandfather, and very little of my maternal ggrandmother.

I'm sure my mother talked about her family at one time, but I was never listening. As far as I know, there are no relatives left from her side of the family so no way of finding out anything about them - just newspaper articles.

First start with their names. Put every piece you know about them on a Family Group Sheet for each family group, and on a Pedigree Sheet. Then you won't have to remember what you still have to figure out.

--Search engines will give some clues.

--Go to the US Census in Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com at your local library (the programs are free there, they won't have the complete file there, but enough to get you started)

--Go to WorldConnect.com ....much of it is free..and you will be surprised at the clues you pick up there.

--I can give you lots more clues about places when you are ready to hear about them. (also see our Genealogy site here on SI with some additional places)

Once you have some Names and Places (you will be able to get the dates most often if you have the first two items), then you can start filling in some of the actual "fun info to know about them".....

All you have to do is put a pencil to the paper to start. Just like Nike says....Just do it.

I use pencil a lot...easy to change. Then someday, you'll put the info into the computer....
