I mentioned that story to someone a few years ago and they offered this as an explanation:

The bride he married was very sick and everyone knew she was going to die. He may have been engaged to the other sister but married the sick one first so that she could die a married woman instead of a spinster, which was a dreaded situation in those days. She may have also been the older sister and the younger sister couldn't marry until the older one got married first.
