Don't know what Drudge meant by the headline - there's no story connected to the headline, just a link to the book on Amazon:

GIFT TO THE DEMS: BUSH TO RELEASE BOOK FOR ELECTION; LEAKS BEGIN IN OCTOBER...

Had a fireman come to the door this morning asking me to sign a petition. I've talked to him before (when the lady across the street done did herself in). The petition is about whether the fire department should stay a city service or if it should be outsourced to L.A. County. If it stays here, they have to let 7 firemen a shift go, 1 less paramedic unit, one less firetruck.

Our little town that used to have a surplus every year is now about $30 million in the hole. I asked why that was and he said that a lot of the Fortune 500 companies that had their headquarters here have moved out of state because of the taxes. My old company was one of them that moved back east.

The town has lost most of its tax base. In addition to that, a majority of the companies are defense related and the DOD budget is getting slashed. There's an Air Force Base here. I know a number of people who are independent contractors, who have worked there for years. They were all recently let go because of budget cuts. Long explanation of what the Air Force is going to do to fill those very necessary positions, but it isn't good.

The town is talking about outsourcing all city services to try and balance the budget - and raise taxes at the same time.

I'm sure we're not unique.
