Sarah was immensely popular after beating Murkowski, and it got even better when oil spiked to $150/barrel and the new oil tax money was rolling in by the billion$. She pushed thru an extra $1,200 annual dividend, so the total 2008 PFD was $3,269 per state resident. But oil and gas prices crashed, the economics of her pipeline project looked shaky, and the 2009 PFD was only $1,305.

Then in early 2009 she tried to refuse the federal "stimulus money" from Washington, and both parties in the state legislature revolted against her. That really helped grease her slide in popularity. We may be a red state, but we're not that red... <g>
