"did the press go after joe the plumber" Sort of. As they should after he inserted himself into the political process, McCain used him as a major example, and his claimed background turned out to be a lie. That made him, umm, colorful. If he had actually told the truth instead of making up a lie, no one would have cared. Of course, then the point he was trying to fabricate wouldn't have worked. Which is why he lied to get his moment of fame.
