Besides, someone with my resume could probably just start a new business. If only government policy actually encouraged small business creation, rather than tax and regulate the hell out of business and give the small ones "breaks" ...

Absolutely.

When I started my first business it was 1981. My wife was making a lot money but not enough to support us until we could get up and running. We had a total of maybe $15K in savings.

The 10K or so in tax refunds we got due to Section 38 credits and "Bonus" depreciation made it possible. Without that additional 10K or so, we would never have survived the 2nd year.

Today, anyone thinking about starting a business had damned well better think twice. Because government isn't working with you it is a against you, in every respect.

When you start a business you make a huge sacrifice in the hope of coming out well in the end. Most of us have to do it a couple or three times before we figure out how to get it right. Without a government that WANTS new startups to be a success, it is very hard to do.

That's not to say industrious people can't do it. But there is no margin for error in our current environment.

BTW, that's a great catch on your part. This fact you pointed out isn't obvious to a lot of people.

Too bad you've never been laid off. I can't think of anyone who'd benefit from the experience more than you. You might actually grow a little..

"Why should I have to apply to low wage jobs just to figure out what "overqualified" means?"

Umm, you are the one claiming that the unemployed can just walk into any job and win it. It doesn't happen.

Oh, I see, Your patented "change the subject because I am getting my plow cleaned" approach.

That is ok, I suppose.

"Besides, someone with my resume could probably just start a new business"

Like what? What in your background would qualify you to start a small business?

" rather than tax and regulate the hell out of business and give the small ones "breaks" ..."

There you go, into fantasy land again.
