In order to have dividend income, one needs to own stocks. In order to have capital gain income, one needs to own assets (stocks, mutual funds, real estate, businesses). In both cases, income from those sources result from ownership of assets, ie wealth, rather than labor.

As you can see most most of the income from wealth goes to older folks who've had the benefit of decades of work, saving, investment, business operation.

People over 45 receive 89% of dividend income and 80% of the capital gain income.

Which tells you that wealth ownership is concentrated in older age groups.

Accordingly, we should realize that a major, and imo, THE major source of "inequality" in this country is age-related. Older folks have simply had more time to acquire assets. This is hardly ever taken into account when you read about how unequal our society is.
