I don't know if you remember when cereal characters had their own cartoon shows- but I was glad the government put a stop to that. TV is powerful marketing- too powerful for most adults to resist, and when aimed at children it's absolutely no contest.

see page 455 of this for the start of the 1974 legislation I remember. Obviously, things could be better.

No doubt you would choose to discount the governments involvement.

My basic view time line wise is that the government direction really came on strong in the 1970's and 1980's.

Nothing happens on the scale that it does with food and pharma without the government joined at the hip to industry and voters.

The government and the food industry selected low fat and high grain (carbs) over meat, eggs, cheese (fat). The government and pharma have also been approving treatment for the multitude of health issues that have developed or worsened because of this path.

My view of the governments capability to lead the country down the wrong direction has only increased through my studies over the last year. Unfortunately a more healthy path will take a generation to determine and implement. Meantime the government lead the country down a path of misery, pain and unimaginable costs.

The two worst points for me can be narrowed down to saturated fat=bad & carbs=good and HFCS instead of sugar.
