You want to separate the bones as much as possible. Stretching is good. Don't do a lot of sitting until the inflammation is down. Then be careful for a long time. No bending at the waist and definitely no twisting. You will not be able to vacuum or sweep ever again. ;)

Seriously, my back doc told me that eventually the disk turns leather like and the pain goes away. She said we all have herniated disks. It's the ones near vital nerves we can feel.

Ask the therapist about Feldenkraise if you get a chance.
