my wife's mom had her and her sister eat dirt when they were very young, so that they would be exposed to small amounts of viruses and bacteria. They never get sick

You are right, you have to get sick for your body to create antibodies. Thats why when we were kids we were sick all the time. There is no such thing as a sterile environment, germs, virus are everywhere.

But with norovirus, it will get you every time, you don't build antibodies to that bug. Once you had norovirus, you will never want that again.
