"The next burst of ideological energy -- massive regulation of the energy economy, federalizing higher education and "comprehensive" immigration reform (i.e., amnesty) -- will require a second mandate, meaning reelection in 2012."

I don't see where you find "loony left" in that. There was a Republican president the last time we did amnesty and a Republican president federalized primary and secondary schools. Certainly neither could be described as socialist. Not sure what will be done with the energy economy so I can't evaluate that one but I seriously doubt it will be socialized, which is the only thing I can think of to do with it that would be in loony territory.

Well, it really wasn't intended to suggest looney leftness, I was just posting Krathammer's commentary. That said, I think it is hard to compare what a president did decades ago WRT amnesty versus what we're looking at now. The entire picture is way different, imo.

I don't know what the right answer is on immigration, and I don't think Obama does, either. But I do know the conflict with AZ is the wrong way to go. He should have gone to the governor and said, "Look, we need to work together to enforce the laws on the books, and here's what I'm prepared to do." Instead, he's suing to prevent her from enforcing the same law the federal government OUGHT to enforce. It may not be looney left in this instance, but it is wrong-headed.
