Sadly.. you are very correct IMHO.

Clearly, the BP spill isn't enough, and all the scientific evidence of global warming isn't enough, and our political/military risk from foreign oil dependence isn't enough, for anything but cosmetic token responses. As a nation, we seem incapable of dealing with any long-term problem.

At some point in the very near future more folks will figure this out. It will come upon us very quickly. China will provide the situation in the end. JMHO

I just don't want to think about the next energy crisis. It will make the ones in the past look like a walk in the park. I intend to be totally off of fossil fuels for my cars in just a couple years. My homes don't use any now. Been working hard on it the last ten years.

As a nation, we seem incapable of dealing with any long-term problem.

And how.

With 60 votes as the bar that is necessary to leap over, and with the prevailing philosophy of one of our two major political parties being "Guv'ment is the problem" and "Lower taxes" as their answer to every non-military issue, it will be impossible to address serious issues in an intelligent, thoughtful way.
