They found that 58 per cent of respondents claim the environment is the new religion, and 54 per cent were tired of being lectured by environmentalists. ......... If you’re giving off even a hint of moral superiority, people are definitely going to think you’re an (eco-jerk). People can pick up on arrogance in a flash and it turns them off. Q: Which sustainability issues do you think are the most likely to evoke pushback from someone who is asked to become more eco-friendly? Jacquet: People are very reluctant to change their flying habits. We have a hard time getting people to commute or change their travel habits, even getting people to fly direct is hard. And food consumption is a really difficult personal issue . . . A certain sector of the population are never going to be affected by what I call shame tactics. Certain people will be affected by that, but the worst offenders will not be bothered by loss of face. [ Even environmentalist nutcases won't change their flying habits. Consider Eric's friends. They're so goofy they vow they won't let their kids touch the toxic Gulf of Mexico water, yet they are still flying the family to Florida. Why? Can you imagine that? A family's going to fly from the Pacific NW to the beach in Florida and the Dad is going to stick his head out the door each morning and sniff the air to see if it's safe for the kids to leave their hotel room. Those poor kids. Crazy. Wait a minute. Now I get it. That is just the cover story they're telling their fanatic friend. They know Eric and they know they have to tell him something silly like that or he'll start in on how toxic the Gulf sewer is. Now that I think about it, this is the only thing that makes sense. They'll go to Florida, go to the beach, parasail, go fishing, have a great time, but go home and tell Eric, it was horrible, couldn't stand the stench, we had to stay in our rooms the whole time. And he already believes it. ] ........... If your friend or family member is about to make a purchase, such as a flatscreen TV, you have a window to slip in some helpful eco-tip. Like “Hey, did you know that flatscreen TVs are made with a greenhouse gas that’s 17,000 times more potent then carbon dioxide? [Hey, we just bought a flat screen. 17 THOUSAND times more potent than CO2! Yeah, baby! ]calgaryherald.com
