Not quite......poor whites identified with rich whites and had "privileges" not afforded blacks, eg sit in the back of the bus, get off the sidewalk, don't look at white women, white only fountains and entrances, etc.... And it was poor whites who often were the ones enforcing those conventions. So after they kicked the blacks they still had the dog to kick......blacks had only the dog..

But I do agree with you, if poor whites had joined with the blacks things might be a lot different now. But I don't think that will ever happen...it's got to come from the top down as it is but it will continue to be a painful process...at the bottom cooperation, pride, and the desire to improve is also essential.

The Democratic party elite in the South did set black and white against one another historically. And they're still doing it. They tell black people Republicans want to bring back slavery, they hurl baseless racism charges at white critics, they set up racial spoils systems aka affirmative action. If they WANTED to nurture bad feelings between blacks and whites, what would today's Democrats be doing differently? Nothing. And they DO want to nurture such feelings.
