I think it is important to recall Emerson's aphorism in toto.

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."

If he had made that list today I think he would have included ideologues.

Recent studies have shown that those of an ideological or religious bent have their beliefs made stronger, not weaker, when they come up against facts that contradict those beliefs.
