I helped my son do his EZ 1040 recently. That's incorrect insofar as fed taxes.

$5 in income = $1 in taxes for Fed alone.

It's a complete myth that the poor pay no taxes.

I said it was an example to get the point through. If you want to follow through then you should say that there is more than just two taxpayers. The numbers speak for loudly that this sort of argument is false.
