All, new serious bug discovered in Pentium-MMX chips:

news.com

The bug is that a regular user instruction but with
incorrect argument causes total lock-up of Pentuim MMX computers instead of generating an interrupt to operating system to
handle it. All P5-based multiuser servers are affected.

Some opinions from Usenet people:

"What makes me think I'll run into this is that the
instruction is not privilaged and I have a Linux box
with a lot of users. Any one of them could now crash
my system at will without even having to try hard,
and there's nothing I can do but disable telnets until
I can get a different chip. I'm sure the Solaris x86
box at my university will be going down a lot... Bad
news for the people who have CS projects due. I'm sure
the people running NT won't be happy either."-Steven Brown

"For the U*ix systems out there running under Intel CPU's,
this is NOT just stirring the pot!!! Any malicious user
can now bring down the entire system at will, with a good
chance of getting away with it!!! This blows BIG TIME!
I'm glad most of my CPUs aren't Pentiums!" -- Peter F Curran

"I'm sitting on a multiuser system, running an Intel
Pentium CPU, this bug is like a few miles worse than the
FDIV bug ever was. So, while I might not have bothered
exchanging my CPU during the FDIV bug era, I surely would
now, although I severely doubt Intel would ever agree on
doing that... The FDIV bug was a laughing matter. A big
company with a monopoly being forced to replace their
product. This one bothers me." -- Joel Lindholm

Good job Intel, again.
