Indeed... insofar as removing trade barriers and inter-European tariffs is all about "money". The first decades of European integration dealt mostly with pooling European resources (CECA for coal and steel), opening up the labor market, drafting common trade and business-related laws and regulations, etc. Then the euro currency was launched in the early 2000s when Europe's economic outlook was still bright... Only today, following the fiscal demise of the PIGS countries, do thrifty Germans (and Dutchmen and Austrians...) realize that sharing a common currency with spendthrift countries will actually COST them a lot...
