There is a saying in English....maybe in French, German, Dutch et al.....Beware of Greeks bearing gifts. <g> Re: Yes, but wasn't money the point of the EU.......to make Europe an economic powerhouse that could compete with the US, China et al? It was all about the money. Indeed... insofar as removing trade barriers and inter-European tariffs is all about "money". The first decades of European integration dealt mostly with pooling European resources (CECA for coal and steel), opening up the labor market, drafting common trade and business-related laws and regulations, etc. Then the euro currency was launched in the early 2000s when Europe's economic outlook was still bright... Only today, following the fiscal demise of the PIGS countries, do thrifty Germans (and Dutchmen and Austrians...) realize that sharing a common currency with spendthrift countries will actually COST them a lot...
