<heat is the main thing needed for desalination plants>

Two main methods of desalination:

1. Distillation: This uses mainly changes in pressure, not changes in temperature, to separate salt from water.

2. Reverse Osmosis semi-permeable membranes: this uses pressure gradients across the membranes; no heat is needed. This process uses less energy. As the technology of the membranes evolves, this method is becoming superior to distillation.

So, there is a niche for cogeneration, but not a big niche, and it will disappear once membrane technology dominates.
