Woman scholar''s death a case of honour killing, says NGO

PTI

Chandigarh, Jul 28 (PTI) An NGO today filed a complaint with the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) alleging foul play in the death of a research scholar of Punjab University here. According to the NGO Students' Human Rights Network (SHRN), a 25-year-old woman, who had recently done her PhD, was allegedly murdered by her family members on July 24 at Chamkaur Sahib town, about 75 km from here, after they came to know of her love affair with a boy from a backward class. "We have received a complaint from the NGO and it has been admitted. The case will be taken up for hearing tomorrow," a PSHRC official said. "The complaint also stated that the woman had shared her fears with her hostel friends apprehending that she would be eliminated by her parents as they were strongly against her relationship with the boy," the official said. The victim, who had got a lecturer's job at a private college here, had gone to her home town on Saturday and informed her parents about her plans of marrying the boy, the NGO stated in the complaint. The NGO has demanded a probe into the matter and registration of case against the woman's family members, according to whom she died of a heart attack. "It is a case of honour killing. The girl feared that she would be harmed because her relationship was not approved by her parents. She did not have any history of heart ailment. Moreover, she was not taken to any hospital nor was any doctor called to her home to check her," SHRN president Deepika Gupta told reporters here. She alleged that the young woman could have been poisoned to death.
