I have been watching the price movement of ACTL the last few weeks, it seems to be staying strong at around 15, even when the DOW tanks one to two hundred points. Best of luck to all.

Doug, They make programable semicondutor chips used a lot by the networking companies. The Mars pathfinder mission also used about 20 of their chips:

The good news is the programable chip market is suppose to be a strong growth market. A second plus is you don't have to worry about foreign competition from say Korea or Japan as all the current companies are located in the USA. The bad news is that Actel is a smaller player in the market that has been dominated by the two market leaders Altera and Xilinx. They are fierce competitors that spend a lot of money on research and are always on the leading edge of technology. They operate much like Intel by constanly improving products and reducing prices; this makes it very tough on their competitors. Lucent has been trying to get into this market bigtime without a lot of success at present. You might compare Actel against Xilinx and Altera to AMD against two Intels. I had this stock for awhile becase its PE was much lower than Xilinx or Altera and I believe the programable chip companies have a strong future. However the PE's of Altera and Xilinx have droped so much recently that I sold my Actel to buy Xilinx. Here are the PE's shown by stocksmart.com

ACTL...........18.5
ALTR...........28.5
XLNX...........20

Xilinx has recently released a lot of new products and is going to begin production using the smaller .25 micron proccess in January.
Their is some concern with their next report to to product transition; but the Jan-Mar 1998 quarter is expected to be very strong. IMHO now would be an excellent time to get into Xilinx as it has been stuck in a trading range between 33 and 38 recenly and right now it is 33.
Check out the XLNX and ALTR threads and make up your own mind
Personaly I've got my money on Xilinx.

Good Luck.
William

ACTL is beginning to look very interesting. All technical are strong..with strong buy signals (to me). What is curious, is that given the favorable technicals, the price is just sitting there...wonder why?
