Most of the coal in China is relatively deep which precludes mountaintop mining.. They do have some strip mines though but they definitely do not have a land reclamation policy like here in the U.S.

You can do a quick google search to confirm that China really only gives lip service to caring about the environment.

My experience is that they only give lip service to mine safety as well. The only reason that they are calling on me is that the international community wants to see them making an effort to make the mines safer. A bad year in the U.S. coal mining industry is when 50 miners die. A bad year in China is when 20,000 miners die. A good year in China only 6000 or 7000 miners die.
