wrong the south left the dems in 64 because the dems left the party of Truman and JFK and became the party of Eugene MacCarthy and George McGovern

What a bunch of baloney. Reagan and Goldwater turned the South Republican in 1964? If so, how did Carter and Clinton get elected? Ditto for all those Southern Democrats who continued to hold office in the South till they died off .... like Gore's daddy, Sam Ervin, Bubba Clinton's mentor, Fulbright, etc? Heck the last one Southern Democrat of that era just died in office - KKK Byrd.

Fact is the south only stopped being monolithic Democratic over a long period of time (well AFTER 1964) and weak liberal Democratic candidates that were rejected by the voters played a major role - McGovern, Dukakis, Mondale, ....
