As you say, people who have never done something need role models, and help. I often help my students apply to community college. I have many students who are the first in their family to finish high school, let alone go to a community college. Often they want something as simple as automotive classes to enhance their ability to repair cars- they aren't even looking for certificates or degrees, but the complex paper work can be a problem for them.

And don't underestimate the cost. In california even though the JCs are a good deal, they are still hundreds of dollars- and to people who are poor, that can represent a lot of money.

But I have hope that if those of us who care work with people who want to better themselves, the world will be a better place. It won't be a perfect place, but it will be better. And there is nothing like helping a person change their life for the better. That is the most amazing reward.
