Brad: yes, that's the fear-based correction (the "or" in my sentence") that will contract the p/e ratios of the financial sector. The other factor is the problem of US debt including bankruptcies and credit-card debt. Most of the market direction is based on interest rates, though, this is why 1982 and 1990 are usually chosen when citing returns from stock-based investments.
