There is a good explanation for what Simmons does. He discovered the peak oil at least 10 years ago and as he has a fertile imagination, he can envision what happens to humanity after a long drawn out process of energy scarcity.

His imagination gets better of him, as it does those who are prone to hysteria. He does not have enough control of keeping his views private. Anyone who has read books on Peak Oil can see that humanity is in a fix. There is no way out of this and those who are prone to hysteria only see dark days ahead. Even those who are not so inclined and have studied this issue in length tend to come to conclusion that with 86% of world depending on fossil fuels, humanity has run out of options and time.

Those still in active professional lives cannot take their private views public. They are used to hiding in the crowd and hope to survive this way.

Matt's age is such that he does not need to do this any longer, and keeps talking publicly about his inner convictions.
