I wonder what proportion of Moslems would think what was done to her was deserved and fair enough if they knew the circumstances. <Was that why the US military was there? Is that why it should stay? What happened to Bin Laden? > I'm inclined to think along Fred's lines: fredoneverything.net That's not why the USA and COW invaded Afghanistan. It's a reasonable reason why it should stay [if the supporters are keen to take on the job which could turn out to be a thankless effort]. Bin Laden escaped from Tora Bora and is in hiding, continuing as best he can with Jihad and he has plenty of supporters, plenty of them in Pakistan which makes it convenient. There are other reasons to stay. For example, Iran is next door and so is Pakistan. Iran is developing atomic bombs to destroy Israel and anything else they fancy. Afghanistan is a handy place from which to launch an invasion of Iran. Or Pakistan. India could invade from the east and the COW from the west and China from the north east via the good old Hindu Kush. There are swarms of troops in Iraq and they could drive east across Iran to help in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is at the confluence of some large geopolitical forces. India, China, Russia, Pakistan are all within a stone's throw. They are all armed with plenty of atomic bombs. Russia could invade Iran from the north. The Russian border is well north now, but that can always be moved south again. What is notable is how badly life has deteriorated across the region over the last 40 years. In the mid 1970s, NZers would buy a car in England, then drive through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India [Nepal] and on through Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and by ship to Oz and on to NZ. Now, they would get as far as Turkey, but anywhere else would be a surprise. Arriving at the Iranian border would probably end the trip [as it did for some young Americans who Obama is trying to have released from Iranian prison]. Heck, Singapore is the only one which is very peaceable. India is not currently in a state of carnage and riot, but don't mention Salman Rushdie or people will blow a fuse. Mqurice
